Ingredients

  • 1/8 apple
  • 1/4 blood orange, plus 1 more for garnish
  • 1/2 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 3 oz dry red wine, such as Rioja
  • 3 oz sparkling cider (or ginger ale for a sweeter sangria)
  • Ice, for serving
  • Colored sugar and Halloween cocktail picks for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Thinly slice the apple and blood orange. Place them in a medium bowl and mix in the sugar and cinnamon. Transfer to a large pitcher and let stand for 20 minutes to allow the flavors to blend.
  2. Pour in the red wine. Stir and refrigerate for 1 hour, or up to 4 hours (avoid going beyond 4 hours to preserve fruit texture).
  3. If desired, wet the rims of glasses and dip them into the colored sugar.
  4. To serve, fill a glass with ice and pour in sparkling cider halfway, then top off with the red wine mixture. Alternatively, pour the wine mixture into a glass and top off with ginger ale.
  5. Garnish with blood orange slices and Halloween cocktail picks. Enjoy the sweetened fruit as a snack once the sangria is gone.
