Ingredients

  • 1 cup milk
  • 5 whole cloves
  • 1-2 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 6 egg yolks
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 cup half and half
  • 1/2 cup brandy
  • 1/2 tsp fresh ground nutmeg
  • Whipped cream
  • Fresh ground nutmeg
  • Cinnamon

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine the milk, cloves, cinnamon sticks, and vanilla. Heat on low for 5 minutes, then bring to a boil over medium heat and remove promptly.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together the egg yolks and sugar.
  3. Gradually add the hot milk mixture to the egg yolk mixture, whisking with each addition.
  4. Return the combined mixture to the saucepan and cook over medium heat for about 3 minutes, whisking continuously until it thickens.
  5. Strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve to remove the cloves and cinnamon.
  6. Refrigerate for 1 hour, then stir in the half and half, brandy, and additional nutmeg.
  7. Chill for 4-8 hours or overnight before serving with whipped cream and a sprinkle of nutmeg.
