Ingredients
- 1 cup milk
- 5 whole cloves
- 1-2 cinnamon sticks
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 6 egg yolks
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 1 cup half and half
- 1/2 cup brandy
- 1/2 tsp fresh ground nutmeg
- Whipped cream
- Fresh ground nutmeg
- Cinnamon
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, combine the milk, cloves, cinnamon sticks, and vanilla. Heat on low for 5 minutes, then bring to a boil over medium heat and remove promptly.
- In a bowl, whisk together the egg yolks and sugar.
- Gradually add the hot milk mixture to the egg yolk mixture, whisking with each addition.
- Return the combined mixture to the saucepan and cook over medium heat for about 3 minutes, whisking continuously until it thickens.
- Strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve to remove the cloves and cinnamon.
- Refrigerate for 1 hour, then stir in the half and half, brandy, and additional nutmeg.
- Chill for 4-8 hours or overnight before serving with whipped cream and a sprinkle of nutmeg.
