Southern Mint Cognac Smash
This Southern-inspired Antebellum Mint Julep is a classic cocktail that harks back to the pre-Civil War era in the South. Originally made with French cognac before foreign products became scarce, this mint julep is a refreshing and aromatic blend of mint, sugar, and cognac over crushed ice. Southern Mint Cognac Smash
A refreshing and aromatic mint julep with French cognac, sugar, and mint over crushed ice, reminiscent of the pre-Civil War era in the South.
Ingredients
- 2 teaspoons of superfine sugar
- 6 mint leaves, plus extra sprigs for garnish
- 2 oz. of cognac
- Crushed ice
- 1 tbsp. water
Instructions
- In a highball glass or silver julep cup, stir the sugar and water until the sugar dissolves.
- Add the mint leaves and gently crush them with a spoon.
- Fill the glass with crushed ice and pour in the cognac. Stir for about 15 seconds until chilled.
- Fill the glass with more crushed ice and garnish with mint sprigs and two straws.
