Ingredients

  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • Pinch of baking soda
  • 1 stick of Mexican cinnamon
  • 2 cloves
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp rum or brandy

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan, combine milk, sugar, baking soda, cinnamon, and cloves, then stir.
  2. Heat the mixture over medium-high heat until it boils, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for 8 to 10 minutes to infuse the flavors.
  3. In a separate bowl, beat the egg yolks.
  4. Mix the beaten egg yolks into the cooled milk mixture and return the saucepan to the stove.
  5. Heat the mixture over medium-high heat for 5 to 7 minutes, stirring frequently.
  6. Remove from heat, strain with a sieve to remove the cloves and cinnamon sticks.
  7. Add rum or brandy, mix, and allow to cool in the refrigerator for at least two hours.
