Ingredients
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon, plus extra for garnish
- 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/8 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 1 large egg yolk
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup heavy cream
- 1/4 cup bourbon or rum (optional)
- Whipped cream, for serving
Instructions
- In a small saucepan over low heat, warm the milk, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla until it just begins to boil.
- In a bowl, whisk the egg yolk and sugar together until the mixture is pale in color.
- Slowly add the hot milk mixture to the egg yolk mixture in batches, whisking constantly to temper the eggs.
- Transfer the mixture back to the saucepan and cook over medium heat until it thickens slightly and coats the back of a spoon without boiling.
- Remove from heat and stir in the heavy cream and, if using, bourbon or rum. Chill in the refrigerator until cold.
- When ready to serve, garnish with whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon.
