Ingredients
- 1 large egg (separated into yolk and white)
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1/3 cup whole milk
- 2 tablespoons heavy whipping cream
- 1/4-1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1-2 tablespoons bourbon (optional)
Instructions
- Separate the egg white from the yolk. Place the yolk in a medium mixing bowl.
- Add sugar to the egg yolk and whisk vigorously until the mixture is pale yellow and fluffy. Set aside.
- In a saucepan, heat the milk, whipping cream, and 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground nutmeg over medium heat until it begins to steam.
- Remove from heat.
- Spoon a ladle full of the hot milk mixture into the egg mixture and whisk. Continue adding ladles of the hot milk until most has been added.
- Slowly drizzle the egg mixture back into the saucepan, whisking as you do so.
- Heat over medium, stirring constantly until the mixture begins to thicken.
- Remove from heat, stir in vanilla extract and bourbon.
- Cover with plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator to cool for at least 1 hour.
- Serve with freshly grated nutmeg. Optionally, whip the egg white until stiff peaks form and gently fold into the chilled eggnog.
