Ingredients

  • 5 oz. red wine
  • 1 large cinnamon stick, or 2 small ones
  • 2 star anise
  • 4 cloves
  • 2 strips lemon zest, pared using a vegetable peeler
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar

Instructions

  1. In a large pan, combine the red wine, cinnamon, star anise, cloves, lemon zest, and sugar.
  2. Cook the mixture on low heat for 10 minutes.
  3. Remove the pan from the heat and allow the flavors to infuse for about 30 minutes.
  4. Reheat the mulled wine without boiling, and if desired, stir in the optional sloe gin before serving.
  5. Pour the mulled wine into mugs or heatproof glasses and enjoy.
