Ingredients

  • 2 cups milk
  • 5 whole cloves
  • 1-2 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 6 egg yolks
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 2 cups half and half
  • 1 cup brandy
  • 1/2 teaspoon fresh ground nutmeg
  • Whipped cream
  • Fresh ground nutmeg
  • Ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, heat the milk, cloves, cinnamon sticks, and vanilla over low heat for 5 minutes, then slowly bring to a boil over medium heat.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the egg yolks and sugar.
  3. Gradually ladle the hot milk mixture into the egg yolk mixture, whisking with each addition.
  4. Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook over medium heat for about 3 minutes, whisking constantly until it thickens.
  5. Strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve to remove the cloves and cinnamon stick, then refrigerate for 1 hour.
  6. Stir in the half and half, brandy, and additional nutmeg, and chill for 4-8 hours or overnight.
  7. Serve with a dollop of whipped cream, a sprinkle of nutmeg, and ground cinnamon, if desired.
